A
welcoming reception will be held on Sunday 26 September at Rydges
Carlton Hotel (**Please note change of venue from St Mary's College),
located at 701 Swanston Street, Carlton, where registration will begin
for the conference.
The
Conference will be held in the historic Old Arts Building (Building
140 Grid Ref. G 6 on the campus map)
Architecturally the building draws its inspiration from the first University
building, the Old Quadrangle, begun in 1854. "It forms a visual unit
with the Old Quadrangle by using similar stylistic details and the distinctive
tower of Old Arts recalls the intention to include just such a tower
as part of the unbuilt south wing of the Old Quadrangle."
The last stone building erected in the University, the Old Arts Building
was designed in 1919 by Mr La Gerche who was then Assistant Architect,
Public Works Department. The building - notable for its spaciousness,
tiered lecture theatres and impressive clock tower - was completed at
a cost of £71,000 and opened in 1924. Mr La Gerche also designed the
Agriculture School at the University and may have designed other University
buildings around this time.
Workshops
will be held in the ICT Building, 111 Barry Street (Grid
Ref: P6 on the campus map).
