Concert

The Congress Concert will be held on Friday July 16 at Melba Hall at the University of Melbourne from 7:00pm.

Performing at the Concert will be acclaimed erhu player Ma Xiaohui, Aboriginal acoustic duo Stiff Gins and award winning pianist Timothy Young.

Ma Xiaohui

Graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the renowned Shanghai "erhu" player Ma Xiaohui is named as China's first-class artist as well as a member of China's People's Political Consultative Conference and of UN Oriental Art Center. She has toured around dozens of countries and regions around the world. In the last ten years she collaborated with world-famous orchestras in more than a hundred concerts. Stiff Gins
The Spirit, The Heart, The Power

Stiff Gins are Kaleena Briggs & Nardi Simpson. In the four years since their first meeting at the Eora Centre in Redfern, Stiff Gins have performed at the Amsterdam Roots Festival, represented Australia at cultural institutes in Noumea, New Caledonia, Hanoi, Vietnam and Xijon Spain, played shows and festivals throughout Canada, the US, Ireland and performed extensively throughout Australia. Stiff Gins are, through harmony & song, reclaiming a derogatory term for Aboriginal woman, whilst declaring they are talented, passionate and proud to be Aboriginal. Timothy Young

After receiving his Diploma with a rare distinction from the Ministry of Education and as dux of his year at the Nicolo' Paganini Conservatorium in Genova, Italy (1995), Victorian born Timothy Young appears frequently in Italy and other European centres, performing as both soloist and chamber music player in contemporary as well as mainstream repertoire. In 1991 he completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons. Perf.) at the University of Melbourne with first class honours and as top performance student in each year of the course. His teachers in Australia have included Professor Ronald Farren-Price and Mack Jost and in Italy Professor Lidia Baldecchi Arcuri (piano) and Massimilliano Damerini (chamber music).
