Dinner with guest speaker Ian Macfarlane
On the afternoon of 28th September there will be symposium organised by Professor Philip Williams on Cartels and the Law: Identifying and Punishing Cartels aimed at people working in industrial organisation, trade practices and company law. One of the speakers at this symposium will be Graeme Samuel, the Chairman of the ACCC who will speak on "The ACCC approach to the detection and prosecution of cartels". Other speakers at this symposium will include Professor Patrick Rey (Toulouse), Professor Joshua Gans (MBS, Melbourne) and Professor Stephen King (Economics, Melbourne & the ACCC). Since both the ALP and the Coalition Parties are now committed to the criminalisation of cartels this symposium should attract a good deal of media attention. This symposium will be held in the seminar rooms at Le Meridien at Rialto.
On the same afternoon there will be a symposium organised by Professor Kevin Davis (Finance, Melbourne) and Professor Guay Lim (Economics & MIAESR, Melbourne) on The Basel II standards for capital requirements and their implications for Australian Banks. Basel II will come into operation in 2006 and involves a marked change in the regulatory regime for banks. Dr John Laker, the Chairman of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, will be one of the speakers. This symposium is aimed at bankers, regulators and academics interested in banking and finance and will also be held in the seminar rooms at Le Meridien at Rialto.
As mentioned both symposia will be held on the afternoon of the 28th of September 2005 in the seminar rooms at Le Meridien at Rialto. On that night (ie the night of the 28th of September 2005) there will be a Business Dinner with RBA Governor Ian Macfarlane as the likely guest speaker. The dinner will be chaired by Tony Cole and will be held in the Rialto rooms at Le Meridien at Rialto (6.30 for 7 start).
