The conference is designed for health professionals, non-government organisations and thinkers from around Australia and internationally.
It is an opportunity to come together to mark the anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by examining current challenges and strategies towards nuclear disarmament and peace in an international context. With around 30,000 nuclear weapons in the world, the nuclear threat remains a vital component in international instability and insecurity.
Australia, like the rest of the world, continues to be greatly affected by warfare and terrorism. These threats are made even more menacing by the possibility of nuclear weapons being used by the eight nations who currently possess them, or by their proliferation.
Nuclear Terror: 60 years on will assess the current world situation in light of warfare, terrorism threats and progress on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. The conference also aims to investigate the possibilities of a nuclear free world, emphasising the potential for positive change to affect the health and environment for all Australians.
Broader issues associated with peace and the nuclear cycle will also be addressed.
In this year Medical Association for Prevention of War join our colleagues internationally in celebrating the 25 year anniversary of IPPNW. We look forward to revitalising Australian thinking and action towards a nuclear weapons free world. We hope you will join us.
